troubling news

Last week I took my mom to the hospital for a biopsy. We were assured that we'd hear back very soon if there was trouble, so by Friday I was feeling pretty relaxed about the whole thing. Yesterday we found out that, in fact, my mom has breast cancer. The doctors are still upbeat and unhurried, which bodes well, I think, but sometime soon mom will be going to Mass General for surgery. I'm sorta worried, but it doesn't seem entirely real to me at this point, so we'll see how I am tomorrow. Mom is actually more calm than she was when she didn't know the test results, though she did get some tranquilizers from Dr. Gendlerman. (weird fact: the family doctor used to a soviet particle physicist before defecting to the west.) Any of you that know my mom, I'm sure she'd appreciate calls or cards of sympathy. Watch this space for updates.

Thanks. I'm working on the sane part, and I hope that spending hours pretending to be someone else is consistent with that. I think that doing it with dice make it not-crazy. :)
