troubling news

Last week I took my mom to the hospital for a biopsy. We were assured that we'd hear back very soon if there was trouble, so by Friday I was feeling pretty relaxed about the whole thing. Yesterday we found out that, in fact, my mom has breast cancer. The doctors are still upbeat and unhurried, which bodes well, I think, but sometime soon mom will be going to Mass General for surgery. I'm sorta worried, but it doesn't seem entirely real to me at this point, so we'll see how I am tomorrow. Mom is actually more calm than she was when she didn't know the test results, though she did get some tranquilizers from Dr. Gendlerman. (weird fact: the family doctor used to a soviet particle physicist before defecting to the west.) Any of you that know my mom, I'm sure she'd appreciate calls or cards of sympathy. Watch this space for updates.

Hugs. I'll talk to you soon hopefully. Talked to your mom last night. She DID seem in good spirits. And I told her she has to get through this and get better because she still hasn't seen my new apartment or Meara or my new improved body! So she has to get better. It's a must. :-)! Seriously though, she'll get the best care available. She'll be fine. I'm confident.

i am terribly sorry to read this news. i am glad, however, that your mom and the doctors are both optimistic. many women survive breast cancer and live totally normal lives - one of my mom's best friends is a breast cancer survivor and has been in remission for upwards of twenty years. i will keep your family in my thoughts.

That sucks. But, as has been mentioned, methods of treating breast cancer have really improved! Best of luck to your mom...

thanks. I really appreciate you calling mom (almost as much as she does). btw, there's a vacuum in your living room. And Meara ran and hid, and wouldn't come out at all. She's a skittish little thing.

Though, in fairness, I guess maybe I could have turned off the chainsaw.

The prognosis is good, it's just scary to realize that my mom is getting old and will one day die. I hope I live to see it, but I hope that I'm a lot older when I do.

Thanks. I'm working on the sane part, and I hope that spending hours pretending to be someone else is consistent with that. I think that doing it with dice make it not-crazy. :)

Of course I believe in your mom, I have irrefutable proof that she exists.. I met her.

Give her my best wishes. And I'll attempt a deccate on the rosery for her tonight.. certainly can't hurt.
