I'm immensely pleased that Saddam Hussein will be tried for his crimes. I think it's the most appropriate thing to do with a ruler who has squandered so many lives and so much of his country's prosperity. I don't care whether or not he is executed, but I do hope that the whole experience is deeply and publicly humiliating for him.

That said, I was amused by this trivialization of the proceedings:

I think Saddam is going to be surprised that he won't be able to string things along the way his pal Slobodan Milosevic has.

Among those of us deployed during OIF at work, we have a betting pool as to which one of Saddam's codefendants will rat him out first. This will also make things harder for Saddam, as people who may rat him out have not been dying of high velocity lead poisoning the way some of Milosevic's henchmen did. (Like Arkan (http://www.fas.org/irp/world/para/sdg.htm), whose widow has been called the world's evilest pop star (http://www.boingboing.net/2004/04/02/worlds_evilest_popst.html). Think Celine Dion crossed with Eva Braun.)

My pick is "Chemical Ali."
