the quick scoop
Apr. 17th, 2004 04:26 pmMillari and I have moved her cat Stinky into our place. After keeping them apart for a few days, we let Feisty and Stinky meet. Stinky was pushy and eventually went on the attack. Feisty mostly tried to run away and hide. I'm disappointed she didn't kick his sorry ass, but I'm glad neither was hurt. I hope that they can work their shit out soon.
I'm not as at home as I should like at home yet, but it gets better as we unpack and arrange.
Today I shall make some big progress on my research project. I have Ashmole's collection of Alchemical texts and an angle of inquiry. For a long time, I have been interested in secrecy and how it shapes scientific inquiry (since openness has long been seen as essential to scientific progress), so I'm going to look in particular at recommendations in the primary documents for the arrangement of experimental alchemical space, and contrast it to experimental spaces for other sorts of natural philosophical work. I think Boyle has something useful in New Experiments, and I bet I'll find some more stuff if I troll the HSS Current bibliographies for the past few years. Also, I should get Sisela Bok's book on secrecy and read it.
I got a book at the store on Wednesday that looks pretty cool: Matters of Gravity: Special Effects and Supermen in the 20th Century, by Scott Bukatman. I don't know when I'll get around to reading it, but looks nifty.
On Wed, half an hour before quitting time at work, Lefty broke out the new Marvel Trading Card game and taught me to play. It's much simpler than OverPower and seems like an OK game. It might catch on, as it actually seems to allow for some strategic play and the cards look nice. (I do wish Lefty would stop telling me how OP sucks, considering he's never actually played a full game and has no idea what he's talking about.) It was nice to get play on the clock like that. I feel Lefty and I are starting to really know each other and I really appreciate that he seems to be opening up more as this happens. (We got a meal and chatted about stuff after last Friday's game.)
My pal Grover has opened a new comic book store in Hadley, called Sidekicks Incorporated. I have known Grover for years, from UMass (he got an MA in history a year ago), from KSP, and from his years working at Showcase comics at the mall. I really hope his store is a big success and brings him (and his customers) years of happiness. I am sad, though, because part of his motivation in opening it appears to be a desire to challenge Bob, the owner of Showcase. I was a customer of Bob's for nearly a decade before Modern Myths opened up down the street and I came to work there. Bob has always been courteous, friendly, respectful and helpful, and while I don't know him well, I quite like him, and I wish him success and prosperity. I don't know that the future holds, but it looks like it will end in bad feelings for at least one of these men whom I like. I hope it does not. (and, more selfishly, I hope it doesn't spill over and affect Modern Myths, though it shouldn't because it really has nothing to do with us.)
It appears that Filthyassistant is done with me. This doesn't make me sad, or happy, or anything, really. Perhaps we'll be friends again, someday, when she's less angry at the world.
Millari's ex has invited us BOTH to attend an event he's having at the Iron Horse in May. I think that I shall attend, and I hope it's not disaster. I miss the friend I used to know, and I'd like to think that he and I have both worked through the personal issues that pulled us apart.
Finally, I really, really love Millari. :)
