Have I become a cranky malcontent in my early middle years? I saw Hellboy with Millari on Saturday, and while it started well, by the end I was really bored. It had become boring, formulaic and quite un-scottish. I used to quite enjoy action films, but now most of them bore and/or repulse me. Do they really suck more, or is it me?

I really do think it's you hun. You're becoming jaded and unable to suspend your disbelief. I thought Hellboy was pretty good. And chunky bits of elder gods is always appreciated.

You're probably right. Though you set the bar pretty low, since you happily go to see films merely because they have pretty people in them.

True...I'm kind of the opposite of you...I genuinely enjoyed Dawn of the Dead. I went in with no expectations and it was fun. I liked the fast zombies. And the end ROCKED!

See, you love to watch the pretty people, but you don't care if they all die. That's just mean. :)

Dawn of the Dead was a great film, even though it really bore little resemblence to the original.

Fast zombies, gore, dogs, its all good.

And for the record GF, SC is right, it is you, you're jaded. Hellboy kicked ass.

Nah action films these days seem to be coming from a cookie cutter. Add some sprinkles for effect and your done.

Most movies seem to have good stars then fall flat.

The movie makers need to start being more creative storyline wise and stop trying to win us over with special effects

Hee...well, then you, me and Lefty are all old cranks together. Although I found the visual effects nifty, we were both a bit bored, and I think Lefty was actively upset at how boring it was...

Hellboy is just the latest example. I was alternately bored and revolted by Kill Bill, and most people I have spoken to thought it was at least OK. I have a long history of finding some action films dull (Rambo was the first time I can think of where most people seemed to like it and I wondered what they were talking about), but fantasy/SF films worked better for me for a long while. Now, the last action/adventure film I can recall outright enjoying was XMen 2. Return of the King was pretty good, but it felt rushed and I await the DVD with the extra 30-60 minutes before I make up my mind.

Increasingly, I find that I watch a film or TV show (or read a book) and think about how much better it could have been, and what choices I think they should have made.
