Here are the first lines of ten books that I really like that I was able to find in less than five minutes hunting about my refuse pile of a home. In no particular order:

"From her perch on the side of the mainroot, Beedie could lean back at minor peril to her life and look up the Wall, the mainroot dwindling away in perspective until the solid, armspan width of it had shrunk down to a mere hair's breadth line at the rim of the chasm." The Flight of Mavin Manyshaped by Sheri S. Tepper

"'We should start back,' Gared urged as the woods began to grow dark around them. 'The Wildlings are dead.'" A Game of Thrones by George R. R. Martin

"'Rocky, would you take a look at this?'" Titan by John Varley

"The suburb of Saffron Park lay on the sunset side of London, as red and ragged as a cloud of sunset." The Man Who Was Thursday by G. K. Chesterton

"Martha Macnamara stood at the Pacific, her toes digging into the froth." Tea With The Black Dragon by R. A. MacAvoy

"Night, near the eastern edge of the walled, sloping grounds of the estate, within in these walls, perhaps a quarter-mile from the house itself, at the small stand of trees, under a moonless sky, listening, he stands, absolutely silent." Eye Of Cat by Roger Zelazny

"The island of Gont, a single mountain that lifts its peak a mile above the storm-racked Northeastern Sea, is a land famous for wizards." A Wizard Of Earthsea by Ursula K. LeGuin

"It was starting to end, after what seemed most of eternity to me." Nine Princes In Amber by Roger Zelazny

"It was a warm spring night when a fist knocked at the door so hard that the hinges bent." Feet of Clay by Terry Pratchett

"When Mr. Bilbo Baggins of Bag End announced that he would shortly be celebrating his eleventy-first birthday with a party of special magnificence, there was much talk and excitement in Hobbiton." The Lord Of The Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien

Okay, out of that list I've read "Tea with the black dragon", "Feet of Clay" and "The lord of the rings".

Out of that list I recognize and/or have read other books by Sheri S. Tepper, Roger Zelazny, and Ursula K. LeGuin.
