I went to seminar today, and I got to Amherst early enough to grab a bite in the dining hall. The food was adequate, and I sat down, and after a bit, I found myself thinking: I'm not pretty enough for this place! It wasn't that there were a number of pretty young things wandering around, nor even that some of them were, despite the autumn chill, practically naked. It was that so many of the young women were fashion plates. Hair and make up done, little sweater tied around waist just so, three layers of light jacket arranged with care, boots that probably cost more than all the clothes I was wearing, perhaps even including the cloak. It was a weird sensation, almost akin to culture shock, which, considering that I don't exactly live poor, was quite unexpected.

Ahem. In a blow for egalitarianism, I pose the question: what about the fashion plate *boys* that go to Amherst College? (And I do use that term precisely...)

Whenever I've ventured onto that campus, I've noticed how unusually attentive to their clothing and appearance Amherst College male students are. Sure the women are fashion plates, but you can get that at UMass or any garden variety college, really. But at Amherst, even when they're dressing casual, the boys are straight out of a Lands End/LL Bean catalog; that is, if they're not pulling the rich boy ghetto-stylin' look.

Just me .02.... Something about that place, I guess.

There were more well-dressed women, and dressed in expensive style, than I have seen in one room in some time. There were plenty of people dressed in rumpled casual style (such as me), but there were a lot of catalog girls, and not that many catalog boys. I did look.

wow, where are you eating? ;)
here in the good ol' southwest, i marvel daily at the sheer volume of sweatshirts and sweatpants and shorts with 'umass' written across the ass. i see messy ponytails and people covering unshowered heads with sweatshirt hoods. more than a few times i've felt somewhat overdressed in my stark black as opposed to their muted grays and maroons and navies, and with my long black jacket with the silver buttons as opposed to faded 'umass' sweats and tees.
oh yeah, and the dirty baseball caps. can't forget about those.

(relieved for once that i live in the umass ghetto haha)

This was the dining common at Amherst college. A whole different world, really.

Maybe I'm a mean person but mostly I just feel sad that these people don't have anything more interesting or worthwhile on which to spend their time.
