Well, that was nice.

I wish to post about two good things happened to me today.
First, as blabbed about on the store's Facebook page, Richard Pini came into the store today. Richard is (or at least was–I know bupkis about his personal life) the husband of Wendy Pini, who wrote and drew the seminal fantasy comic Elfquest. Richard, as far as I know, co-wrote the story and handled the publishing.
Anyway, the point is that, back in 1986, two things got me interested in comics: Dark Knight Returns #3 (someday I'll post about Frank Miller and how far he's fallen) and Elfquest #16. I'd seen a bit about Elfquest in Dragon magazine, and it looked kinda cool, so I thought I'd check it out, and even though I had no friggin' idea what was going on, and I was intrigued and found the old Donning Starblaze collections at Memorial Hall Library. Those got me hooked. And from there, comics were a major interest of mine. Such that, standing there talking with Richard today, I realized that much of my life happened because of him. (As I may have mentioned elsewhere, I gave my cat the same name as his and Wendy's old dog. And I feel weird calling a woman I have never met by her first name. I hope Ms. Pini doesn't mind the familiarity.) "So long, and thanks for all the fish," I told him as he left.
I really hope he's able to strike a deal with, say, Dark Horse or IDW to bring EQ back into print, with nice color editions in $15-$25 range. Hand to god, I will sell the shit out of those things.
Also, I went to the Bon Appetit Burlesque, as the guest of
bottledgoose. I enjoyed talking with her for a bit, and hollering at the performers (catcalls are encouraged by Hors d'ouvres, the MC), and I was particularly impressed by Captain Elastico, who came danced as both a bishop, and then as Krishna fighting a dragon. My depression has so socked in my libido, that I round myself appreciating the show aesthetically more than erotically, which is why the male stripper was the act I found myself enjoying the most. (Though the ladies were all really good.) Hors is a hilarious MC, and I shall definitely buy him a drink next time.
(oh, and because Skull Jr. is in the shop, I'm driving around another rented Ford Focus. Man, I really like these things.)
