This is a link to an op-ed piece in the Washington Post, by Andrew J. Bacevich, a professor of International Relations at BU.  An opponent of the war since it began, he reflects today on his son's recent death in Iraq.   I don't have words to describe how bleak it is.  The father of someone on my friend's list recently died, and my heart goes out to him, as it does to Mr. Bacevich.  What's even sadder about Mr. Bacevich's loss is that others will lose their loved ones in the same way, not because humans get ill and die (an inevitable truth), but because the people with the power to stop it won't, which is, of course, entirely evitable.  As he puts it:  "I know that my son did his best to serve our country. Through my own opposition to a profoundly misguided war, I thought I was doing the same. In fact, while he was giving his all, I was doing nothing. In this way, I failed him."
