Mar. 15th, 2007 01:31 amThis evening I watched a DVD from PBS about the Spartans, (called "The Spartans" laconically enough), presented by Bettany Hughes. I borrowed it from SV and CSD a couple of months ago and finally got around to watching it because of all the ballyhoo around Frank Miller's wretched 300. It was an interesting reminder of how the past can be truly alien, and Sparta is at once hatefully alien and oppressive, and appealingly liberated in others. It was also a good overview of the Peloponesian War, and it reinforced for me my impression that invading Iraq has been our attack on Syracuse, complete with reinforcements. I'm just waiting for the total lunar eclipse.

Date: 2007-03-16 05:06 am (UTC)Seriously though, it is an excellent antidote to the whole 300 miasma, and I think you're right on the equivalency between Iraq and Syracuse.
Hope to see you soon, after poor
Hugs!
