Here are a couple of links to things I found genuinely interesting.  First, ABC news  forgets itself and does some actual journalism, discovering how Homeland Security assessed New York as a terror target.  The results will surprise you.  http://blogs.abcnews.com/theblotter/2006/06/no_icons_no_mon.html

And this is of more historical interest, an article on the catacombs below Moscow.

On the homefront, Millari and I have done a fair amount of yardwork, but have much more to do.  Today, exterminators came and sprayed for wasps, carpenter bees and such.  Ah, home ownership.  We have also gotten the new Venture Brothers season 1 DVD, and it's just as funny as we hoped.  Tonight is game night, and a new episode of Dr. Who, and it strikes me as I write this just how much of our lives are centered around art.

Why should those results surprise me? They've been using Homeland Security money as pork for quite some time now (http://www.newsmax.com/archives/articles/2004/4/14/163610.shtml).

Heck, you can pretty much guarantee that any money the federal government collects is allocated on a political basis. This has been true at least since the New Deal. (It's probably been true much longer than that.)

Like so many other bad things about Bush, this is simply an exacerbation of a previous problem. (When we remember Bush the Second in the future, we should refer to him as "ther Exacerbator.")

Your second link is a repeat of the ABC one, but I've found a related one (http://outside.away.com/magazine/0997/9709under.html).

Oh, thanks for the spot on the Moscow link. I'll fix it now.

I thought the ABC story might surprise simply because the Homeland Security assessement of New York as having zero national monuments or points of interest is just so blatantly, transparently wrong that I'm surprised that they felt able to use it in a public document.
