The things that surprise me
May. 31st, 2006 04:18 pmGraduate Commencement at UMass was a very simple affair in the Mullins Center, with a brief congratulations and thanks from the Chancellor, calling out everyone's name and having them walk across the stage and shake hands, and presenting one honorary degree to a former UMass bureaucrat who has recently saved another college in Virginia from dissolution. I knew a few other people slightly, and randomly wound up next to a very pleasant, somewhat older than me man who turned out to be married to one of my professors from a few years ago. Neither of us had any idea, and I only know now because
millari used to work for her, and recognized him, and was giggling about how small a world it can be.
Anyway, my parents, brother,
wolfy, MAMEd and his family and, of course, my sweetie all came, and I saw Larry and Brian, my two coolest professors, and it was genuinely nice that folks cared, and showed up just because it was there, because, really, it was mostly pretty dull. Thank you, everyone who came, or sent congratulations. I am surprised that they mean so much to me.
On a side note, I have seen three movies in the past week, the DaVinci Code, XMen 3, and Aeon Flux from a couple of years ago. All were pretty lackluster, perhaps not actively bad, but not really worth seeing, unless you really dig Ian McKellen getting to do his stuff. XMen, in particular, was a disappointment, because all the interesting character moments that Bryan Singer and the others managed to find in the first two films were almost completely absent from this one. This one, instead, had lots of random character choices that made little sense and/or generated little interest, and the bits that could have been fascinating were simply too hurried to do more than flop onto the screen. Superman Returns better be really amazing, or I shall be very disappointed in Mr. Singer for leaving something that was going well to do it.
