I have recently had occasion to consider how I deal with stress, and I realize that one thing I do is read certain books, which I dub Comfort Books.

For me, a few which come to mind are:

J.R.R. Tolkien, Author of the Century by Tom Shippey
Science Fiction In The Real World by Norman Spinrad
The Lord of the Rings
Astro City: the Tarnished Angel by Kurt Busiek and others
Buck Godot: Zap Gun For Hire (and others) by Phil Foglio
Game of Thrones et al by George R.R. Martin

there are more, I'm sure, but I can't think of them right now. Anyway, gentle readers, I'm curious:
What are your comfort books?

My comfort books are usually children's books, especially those I grew up with, particularly the Melendy series by Elizabeth Enright and Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, and also the Narnia books. I also like reading ghost stories both fictional and "real". And then I like to read big monographs on my favorite artists when I'm sad or sick, since I'm such a visual person, the art comforts and the text takes me back to a time not my own.

It's a kid's book, but Knight's Castle (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/015202073X/002-1419515-5349630?v=glance&n=283155) by Edward Eager, is still one of my favorite books.

(apparently, i need a lot of comfort)

when I'm really sick. Something entertaining and silly.

I tend to gravitate towards pratchett and Delint in general though.

I was going to say Larell K. Hamilton novels, as the editorial errors occasionally drive me nuts, but, well, she's very good at an easy, entertaining read. Er, if you're into that much sex in your novels, that is.

Otherwise? Pratchett and Delint.

Escapism? You bettcha!
