I am very worried for the future of the US with the idiots currently running it getting another four years to do more damage. I am very concerned about the disconnects growing between people like me and people like the 'morals voters' who turned out to strike down gay marriage and, while they were at it, re-elect an obvious incompetent.
Yet, things could be a lot worse, as witnessed by what's going on in the Ukraine. Our political system is corrupt and needs repair, but it's sound at its core, and while the nakedly corrupt faction of the republican party is bad, I don't think Karl Rove or W would actually have tried to have Kerry killed. (Cheney, who knows?)

I have now. Jeez. Even Nixon is aghast.
Kuchma obviously wasn't impeached, but is the shit-storm Gongazde's murder set off part of why he's not fighting for re-election right now?

They have term limits.

There have been a bunch of scandals and storms in Kuchma's time in office, and he's survived them all. How? By using the methods like thos employed in Donetsk (http://www.exile.ru/2004-December-10/feature_story.html).

Ah. Well, there's nothing easier than establishing an evil dictatorship when everyone pitches in and helps.

There was a good article (http://csmonitor.com/2004/1213/p01s02-woeu.html) on this, and about how this is typical of the elections in most Soviet succesor states (excepting the Baltics, and they've had their moments) in the Christian Science Monitor.
