On a whim, I checked out various people's individual journals, and discovered that many entries do not show up on my friends page. I don't understand why, but it's very irritating, as it rather defeats the purpose of the friends page.

actually, I know one other person whose live journal removed people from her list without her knowing.

You may want to report that to support and see what they say. It may be a new bug that they don't know about.
