There has been a recent uproar in our national consciousness because of the suicide of a young woman in South Hadley. New in town, she was apparently hounded by a number of her new schoolmates and made so miserable that she hanged herself. The school’s administrators claim that they didn’t realize that there was a problem, though the girl’s mother had told them that there was and asked for their help months before.
( Cue Flashback. )
Anyway, I'm open to almost any measure that works in reducing the fear in kids lives. I never seriously considered suicide, but that might just be luck of biochemistry, or maybe the girl in South Hadley, this poor kid just had it worse than I did. I don't know. I did have a counselor, Eileen Spirro, who was kind to me, and maybe that made the difference. I don't know. I can only dimly imagine how much worse it would be for kids forced to be soldiers or sex slaves. But the folks who disregard this issue are wrong to do so. These kids might grow up to be the saviors of us all one day.
