RIP Gary Gygax
Mar. 4th, 2008 10:32 pmGary Gygax, the most prominent creator of D&D (if only for his unusual name) died today. He was only 69 years old. Lefty was joking that, given all the coke he was reputed to have snorted in the 80s, it was a miracle he was still alive today. I have no idea those stories are true. I never met Mr. Gygax, and I wasn't terribly impressed by his books or his adventures that I read. (Though I may be misremembering; as far as I can recall, all the really cool 1st edition adventures were written by others.) But, without him there wouldn't be D&D. And without D&D I wouldn't have gotten to know Millari, or some of my other dear friends, like J down in Atlanta. And maybe Modern Myths wouldn't be around, and I'd have different job. I have no idea, really, but it's had to imagine my life without D&D, and it's been a part of some of the best times, so thank you, Mr. Gygax, and godspeed.
EDIT: unsurprisingly, Rich Burlew has the best tribute I have seen yet. I hope someone does a comic strip about me when I die.
