Jan. 7th, 2007 11:42 pmI keep meaning to post my news, and maybe deep thoughts about god knows what, and I keep finding other things to do with my time, and posting becomes an increasingly big deal. So, here's something quick and to the point.
This weekend has been very tiring. Yesterday, M and I went to the Ikea store in New Haven. We meant to leave early, but despite getting up around 9:30 AM, we still didn't actually leave for CT until 1:30 pm. (We did use the time to good effect, getting garbage out of the house, having a nice breakfast at the diner, and going over the catalog together and making plans.) For various reasons, I had gotten only two hours of sleep Friday night, though, so I feared running out of gas getting such a late start. Happily, while I had a few wobbly moments here and there, on the whole I did rather well. I drove us down and back and did most of the heavy lifting and navigating.
I had been warned, but I was still unprepared for how crowded Ikea was--especially impressive given the huge size of the building. I don't think I have anything to say about that that someone who has been there doesn't already know--and given the crowds, clearly everyone in the world has been to an Ikea store. We were there six & a half hours, until they closed at 9 pm. Then we drove home, brought in the book cases, CD holders, small tables, swivel chairs and assorted bric a brac, collapsed into bed, kissed desultorily for a bit, and then fell asleep. I'm proud that I remembered that I had to work today and set my alarm. (I woke up and did game design in the wee small hours for a bit, but I was very focused on my task. More about that later.) Anyway, my cellphone woke me at 9:07. It was Lefty, asking why I wasn't at the store for inventory. Happily, I woke right up, pulled on some clothes and got out the door, arriving at the store only 15 minutes later (it's a ten minute drive.) Ironically, I have had this work shift in my calendar for a year. Inventory went better than ever before. While I was there just as long as ever, we got so much more of it done, we may be finished with all the paper work by the time we open tomorrow--and certainly by the time we close.
On the business front, the store enjoyed terrific growth in 2006, and while we don't expect double digit improvements this year, a modest increase seems a reasonable hope, with prosperity for us all hopefully in the bargain.
I intend to post about: gaming, writing, resolutions for 2007 and reflections upon 2006, and maybe even insights onto my deepest personal hang-ups (if I don't chicken out. :) I probably shan't post about the burning issues of the day, such as the war in Iraq, the new Democratic congress, or the freakishly warm weather with attendant spectre of climate change and the prospect of the collapse of our golden age and perhaps even imprending extinction, because I don't think I have anything terribly helpful to say. Long story short: to hell with Iraq and the war on terror. The real threat is climate change and the collapse of the global economy. Not that my opinions carry any weight.
And now, I go to help my wife clean up the kitchen. I am genuinely happy about doing this. Hurray!
