I have come across some news stories that caught my eye of late, and so I'm dumping them here. Read them. Or don't.

This is the homepage for a guy who builds jet engines as a hobby. Recently, he's decided to build a homemade cruise missile for under $5000 US as a proof-of-concept that cruise missiles are now within reach of the public, if they know how.

Archeologists are excavating a fabulously preserved Roman army barge from the Rhine river. While not as exciting as, say Genghis Khan's tomb (maybe that should be my answer to Lefty's question), it's historically more interesting in many ways, since it will tell us a lot that we don't know about how thousands of people lived in the Roman Empire. Which, I think, is really cool.

Global calamity and the collapse of civilization may be just around the corner, but I certainly think that it's underway. The problem outlined in this story about global water reserves declining is too pervasive in its extent and profound in its effects for our species to safely ignore it. So, likely, we'll unsafely ignore it until loads of fecal missiles hit the rotating blades.

Meanwhile, a new report has come out about how our nation lacks a coherent and sensible policy for preserving the oceans as valuable natural resources. I'm sure the Bush administration will pay no attention whatsoever.

I was fascinated to read that about 70,000 years ago, when modern humans were apparently supplanting all other related hominid species, we were on the verge of extinction. It's highly speculative and doesn't fit in well with what I have previously understood about the early history of our species, but if true, it's food for thought.
