I have a few minutes, so I'm going to finish the story of the wedding.  The day of Secretive's wedding itself was sweltering, and featured a torrential downpour or two, though that had little effect on us.  We were picked up and taken to the wedding in a stretch SUV limo thing, with room for 17 people inside.  The wedding itself was lovely, and Secretive and his wife were clearly very happy to be together, and I managed not to muff the reading.  Then we piled back into SUV-thing and went to the Chateau Briand restaurant for the reception.  First, we went upstairs to a holding room, where many photos were taken.  There was a buffet there, featuring lobster and other delicacies, which was apparently there merely to tide us over until the Cocktail Hour.  Said Hour was an extravagant smorgasbord, including a self-serve caviar bar with at least half a dozen kinds of roe; sushi made to order; a carving station serving veal, buffalo, and wild boar; selections of expensive cheese; huge displays of fruits and other things I can't even recall, and of course an open bar.  It was a staggering amount of food, yet it was only a prelude to the feast.

The actual dinner featured seven courses plus dessert, and included crabs, shrimp and kobe beef.  There was a six piece band that, while cheesy, was skilled.  There were pauses between courses, in which the tables were cleared and reset.  The waiters always hovered attentively (though they couldn't manage to bring me non-fizzy water consistently.)  Altogether, the reception lasted about eight hours (or about three too many) and was completely exhausting and the most extravagantly expensive event that I have ever attended.  Poor Veritas was wigged out by the whole affair.  He kept repeating: you don't understand, I grew up in a trailer park in Florida.

One cool thing: at the end of the night, the bride got the band to play the song Signed, Sealed Delivered while she sang, and she really did a great job.

The next day, Saturday, we skipped the post-wedding brunch because I had to work at 5pm.  Ironically, despite leaving at 12:40 pm (and thus allowing 50% more time than it took us to drive down), I was still ten minutes late.  I am at a loss to understand how.

and now, off to therapy.
